The Last Week in Brookline: Sept. 6 to 12

Children head back to the classroom, election day nears and planning begins for Cleveland Circle hotel.

After the heat wave that marked the beginning of the month, this last week seemed to bring summer to an abrupt end in Brookline.

As the schools welcomed a record-breaking number of students into classrooms readied by a summer of construction, we took a look at prospects for the Brookline High football team and watched performances by the girls soccer and field hockey players.

Election season kicked in to high gear this week, as candidates made a last push for voter support heading into Tuesday's primary. In Brookline's senate race, candidate Charles Rudnick made a stink about an endorsement mailing that appeared to overlook his pro-choice stance, while Governor Deval Patrick made a campaign stop at Brookline's Moishe House.

Brookline Police were kept busy trying to find what happened to a missing police officer after a recent report that he had been spotted in Vermont. And just over Brookline's border, Boston Police were investigating a pedestrian crash on Perkins Street that sent someone to the hospital with life-threatening injuries.

We also learned this week about plans for a temporary curbside park in Coolidge Corner, and a proposal for a hotel that would be built at the site of the empty Circle Cinema building in Cleveland Circle.
