Three Things To Do In Brookline This Weekend

Our Friday preview of weekend happenings in Brookline.

Take one look at the Brookline Patch Calendar and you'll see there's no shortage of things to keep you and your family busy this weekend. Here are a few of the happenings we're most excited about:

Nerd out on bikes at Larz

Sure, an auto museum would typically celebrate most anything with four wheels and an exhaust pipe, but Larz Anderson cares about bicyclists too. In fact, the museum has declared a "Bike Day" this Sunday, opening its lawn to high wheelers, specialty and custom bikes, road bikes and any number of other unique models. Show off your own two-wheeler for a $5 registration fee, or just come to watch and gawk. Free for members; $10 for adults; $5 for seniors, army personnel and children under $5.

Watch puppets baking bread, kinda

What better way to spend the weekend than watching a fable that preaches the virtue of hard work? This Sunday, the Puppet Showplace Theatre presents a production of the tale of a barnyard baker who can't get any help with her bread-making until the final product comes out of the oven. For extra credit, skip across town to Clear Flour Bakery to see how it's actually done. Shows at 1 and 2 p.m.; tickets $10.

Party with the Pops in the Park

Well, not all the Pops. Boston's favorite orchestra is marking its 125th anniversary by sending five musicians – you might event call them a "quintet" – to play brass favorites at the Allerton Overlook at Brookline's Olmsted Park. The musicians will perform marches, ballads and quick-steps from the Civil War-era, as well old-time ragtime favorites and turn-of-the-century jazz, all in a natural amphitheatre overlooking Leverett Pond. The show is free and open to the public.
