Three Things to do in Brookline This Weekend

Our Thursday preview of weekend happenings in Brookline.

Take one look at the Brookline Patch Calendar and you'll see there's no shortage of things to keep you and your family busy this weekend. Here are a few of the happenings we're most excited about:

Lounge on the Curb in Coolidge Corner

What can you do with a parking space besides put a car on it? A coalition of urban planners and green space advocates has taken it upon themselves to transform four Coolidge Corner parking spaces into an urban curbside oasis on Friday. Planners are putting together to temporary parks on either side of Harvard Street, featuring grass, picnic benches, a shallow pool and outdoor theater showing documentaries on urban park projects. The event, part of national Park(ing) Day, is meant to get people thinking about how municipalities use public space available in the busiest parts of town. Friday, Sept. 17, all day. Free. Harvard and Green streets.

Meet an Up-and-Coming Writer Before They're Famous

On the third Friday of every month, the Brookline Booksmith turns its reading room over to writers, poets and essayists slaving away for a Masters of Fine Arts at Emerson College and Umass-Boston. The Breakwater Reading Series is free and open to the public, though its unlikely that any of the readers would turn you down if you offered to buy them a drink. Friday, Sept. 17, at 7 p.m. Free. Brookline Booksmith, 279 Harvard St.

Eat a Garden, or at Least Part of It

The green-thumbed growers of Brookline have been busy planting their yards and side lots with a bounty of fruits and vegetables this summer, and now's your chance to share in the harvest. Bountiful Brookline has arranged a self-guided tour of edible gardens, both private and public, along with activities, raffles and a musical performance. Organizers promise to have refreshments on hand, but don't say whether you have to harvest them yourself. Tickets include information and a map of garden sites. Sunday, Sept. 19, at 1 p.m. $5 person / $10 family. Tickets sold day of the event at the Brookline Community Foundation, 40 Webster Place.
