What's Open, Closed On Thanksgiving In Brookline

BROOKLINE, MA — Thanksgiving is set to be observed this year on Thursday, Nov. 26, marking the official start of the holiday season.

The holiday will likely look very different this year as it comes amid an unprecedented time and a call from the governor to keep celebrations within the household. But one thing that will look the same? The closures around your neighborhood the holiday brings.

Here's a list of what will be open and closed this year on the day:

Banks: Banks, including The Federal Reserve, will be closed on Thanksgiving.

Courts: Courts will be closed.

Federal, State and Municipal offices: Government offices are closed.

Libraries: Public libraries will be closed.

Mail: The United States Postal Service will not deliver mail on Thursday. And UPS and FedEx pickup and delivery services will not be available, either. UPS Express Critical, and FedEx Custom Critical will both still be available.

National parks: The National Park Service will be closed.

Retail: Stores are closed in Massachusetts on the holiday.

Schools: Schools will be closed.

Trash: Pick up for both trash and recycling is pushed back a day, meaning if you have Thursday service, it will be pushed to Friday.

Grocery stores, and package stores: Closed. Read what is open.

Fun fact: The holiday goes back to 1789, when President George Washington declared a day in late November as one for public thanksgiving and prayer. But it took more than a half century before Thanksgiving was recognized as a federal holiday. In 1863 President Abraham Lincoln and set the last Thursday in November as a federal holiday. And so it has gone.
