Crew 1799 Outdoor Adventures

Crew 1799 has been busy this year with Ice Fishing, Canoe Camping and other great trips!

Crew 1799, a High Adventure Venture Crew based in Burlington, MA has certainly been busy! Over the summer, the Crew took a 6 day canoeing camping trip on the Allagash River in Northern Maine. The paddling ranged from whitewater/white-knuckle rapids to serene ponds to everything in-between. Moose sightings, beautiful campsites, star-gazing, great meals and swimming in surprisingly warm water were trip highlights.

Getting back into the swing of things this fall, the Crew held a Shakedown camp out with skills reviews, hiking and other great activities.

Outdoor skills such as rock climbing, high ropes courses, axe usage and bb guns were the highlight of the November trip to Camp Sayre. Crew members did an amazing job of climbing high tower and tight-rope courses at the professionally supervised Camp Sayre COPE course. After a great dinner and campfire, the next day saw the Crew take a leisurely hike through some beautiful terrain in the Blue Hills area.

Late December was the annual Crew Reunion trip to a remote cabin in New Hampshire. The Crew backpacked in their personal gear over a challenging and ice-covered three mile trail. More hiking happened over the course of the trip, and, having built up a powerful appetite, devoured a great meal of deep-fried turkey with carrots, potatoes and stuffing. A great opportunity for new and veteran Venturers to get together for great hiking and a relaxing evening of fun and games.

Continuing their theme of learning new skills, the Crew went ice fishing in Billerica in support of the Ed Peary Memorial Ice Fishing event. The crew learned to use “tip-ups,” bait lines and catch fish. And also learned a lot about ice safety!

The summer "Big Trip" to SeaBase:

Coral Reef Sailing: A 40 - 50' sailing yacht will become your home for a week. It has a large self-contained galley and dining area where you will prepare wholesome meals from the fresh or canned foods supplied by Sea Base, supplemented by fresh catches from trolling while underway.
Your captain will instruct you in navigation, fishing, and sailing, and will remain on board for the entire trip. You choose your float plan to explore the beautiful Florida Keys. This trip offers one-of-a-kind snorkeling and abundant fishing. You'll spend a "port day" back at Sea Base and have the chance to demonstrate your sailing skills in our fleet of Hunter Sailboats. This is a seven day event.

Venture Crew 1799 is a youth-led, adult-mentored, group of young men and women aged 14 – 20 who participate in high adventure activities to give them planning experience, great outdoor activities, leadership training and practical experience, and most importantly, fun times with friends and mentors.
