Group Gets More Money To Expand Burlington-To-Lowell Bus Service

The move is backed by businesses, who say it will make it easier to fill service-sector job openings.

BURLINGTON, MA -- The Boston Region Metropolitan Planning Organization awarded $290,000 over three years to the Middlesex 3 Coalition to expand bus service between Burlington and Lowell. The bus route is seen as a way to make it easier for Burlington-based restaurants to fill job openings. The most recent award follows a $125,000 line item in the state budget for the bus service that was approved in June.

The Lowell-Burlington bus line is operated by the Lowell Regional Transit Authority. The authority currently offers 14 daily trips on weekdays between Lahey Clinic in Burlington and Kennedy Center in Lowell. The route includes stops at the Burlington Mall, as well as stops in Bedford and Billerica. But the last bus departs Burlington at 8 pm.
