Haunted Halloween , visit the Precinct Burying ground ca. 1730
Burlington's Oldest Burying Ground dates to 1730. Our town was then known as Woburn's Second Parish or Second Precinct.
The Second Precinct Burying yard has over 188 marked graves. It was first used in 1730 when Burlington was part of Woburn. Then land belonged to Benjamin Johnson who allowed the burials. In 1769, Johnson donated this land to the town. Nearly an acre in size. it is living history and art. 22 Veterans of the American Revolution lie buried here, as well as early ministers, town founders and at least 2 African American slaves. Their epitaphs tell the story of everyday life in this area for nearly 300 years. As evidence from the stones, time and weather has taken it toll. many slates are now unreadable. The good news is many can be cleaned and restored. The Burlington Historical Commission is custodian of this historic land and hopefully will act to preserve this rich parcel of History.
