Cambridge Hoops Tourney Highlights Men's Health Month Events

The Men's Health League and community partners will host the annual Hoops 'N' Health sports tournament in Cambridge.

CAMBRIDGE, MA - The Men’s Health League and community partners will host the annual Hoops ‘N’ Healthsports tournament in Cambridge and other events this June to celebrate Men’s Health Month.

The Men’s Health League, based at the Cambridge Public Health Department, is a comprehensive men’s wellness program that promotes routine screenings, fitness and a healthy diet, and regular visits to a physician, according to a release.

Cambridge kicked off Men’s Health Month with a Boys to Men Leadership Brunch on June 4, hosted by the Men's Health League and Men of Color Task Force, according to a release. The event featured opening remarks by Charles Daniels, CEO and founder of Fathers’ Uplift, followed by a discussion on fatherhood and an awards ceremony, according to a release.

  • The Henry A. Lewis III Health Leadership Award was presented to Ellen Semonoff, Assistant City Manager for Human Services for the City of Cambridge
  • The Sion Chambers Community Health Award was presented to Shawn Proctor, a Father Facilitator for Baby University, and Luis Vasquez, a Father Outreach Worker for the Center for Families and Agenda for Children Literacy Initiative.

On Saturday, June 18, the Men’s Health League, in partnership with the Men of Color Task Force, is hosting the twenty-third annual Hoops ‘N’ Health sports tournament and health fair at Hoyt Field in Cambridge. The event will feature a basketball tournament, health information and screenings, live entertainment, children’s activities, free food, cooking demonstrations, and prizes. Hoops ‘N’ Health Saturday, June 18, 10 a.m.-6 p.m.
Hoyt Field (near corner of Western Ave. and Montague St.), Cambridge

Fit For Life Now recruiting for Summer Session (Orientation: Wednesday, June 22)
Are you at risk for heart disease or diabetes? If so, the Fit For Life program may be a great first step toward taking better care of your health. This free 12-week program includes access to the Cambridge YMCA and the War Memorial Recreation Center; education for men around nutrition, fitness and other issues; group and individual workshops; and a mentor to help keep participants on track.
