Cambridge Police Deploy "Bait" Packages to Catch Thieves
Cambridge Police are using "bait" packages to catch holiday package thieves in the area.
CAMBRIDGE, MA - In an effort to deter and catch package thieves, this week Cambridge Police started using "bait" packages this week.
Equipped with a GPS tracking device inside, the packages are left on doorsteps in high theft neighborhoods. When a suspect takes a package, officers can be notified via text alerts and respond to the location to contact the individual in possession of the package.
Cambridge Police Dept. spokesperson Jeremy Warnick said the "bait" packages were deployed this week but thus far, police have yet to make an arrest with them.

Warnick said the new tactic is part of a broader effort to deter thieves.
Just before Thanksgiving, Cambridge Police announced their larger outreach plan. In addition to the bait packages, officers conducted door-to-door outreach in neighborhoods that have historically been victimized by package thefts.

Warnick said Cambridge Police have previously used the same technology on bicycles and made arrests over the summer when thieves attempted to steal bait bikes.
Cambridge Police offered residents tips to help protect themselves and their packages:
- Request the delivery of package(s) via a signature to ensure the package will not be left on the front steps or foyer
- Track your packages online, so you have a better idea when it is scheduled to arrive.
- With the United States Postal Service delivering packages seven days a week through the holidays, request that your packages arrive on a weekend day, if you plan on being home.
- Have your packages delivered to your work address or to a neighborhood friend or family member who would be home, in the event that you are not.
If you're suspicious or have experienced this type of activity, report it to the Cambridge Police Department immediately by calling 617-349-3300.
