Cambridge Streets to Avoid During Oktoberfest, HONK! Parade This Weekend

They're gonna be fun. ... unless you're an unprepared driver.

CAMBRIDGE, MA — This weekend marks the 38th annual Oktoberfest in Cambridge, as well as the HONK! Parade.

That means beer, music and a potential headache for drivers who don't plan ahead. Fortunately, Patch has you covered.

Oktoberfest is Oct. 9, and roads will be impacted for most of the day.

The following streets will be closed, starting at 7 a.m.:

  • JFK between Mt. Auburn St. and Mass Ave.,
  • Mass Ave S/B between Garden St. and Brattle St.,
  • Brattle St. from Mass Ave. to Story St.,
  • Mount Auburn @University Road, Palmer St, Church St
  • Winthrop St. between JFK and Eliot St.

Roads will re-open beginning at 7 p.m.

Meanwhile, the 11th annual HONK! Fest parade will be heading down Mass. Ave., starting from Davis Square and ending at Harvard Square. It begins at noon, and should get to Harvard by about 2 p.m.

The route goes from Day Street to Elm Street to Beech Street, then on to Mass. Ave. eastbound, before it meets up with Oktoberfest at Harvard Square.

Here's the full list of impacted streets:

  • Day Street
  • Elm Street
  • Beech Street
  • Allen Street
  • Russell Street
  • Chester Street
  • Milton Street
  • Porter Road
  • Upland Road
  • Mount Vernon Street
  • Arlington Street
  • Lancaster Street
  • Linnaean Street
  • Chauncey Street
  • Waterhouse Street
  • Garden Street

All that said, only a few roads will be fully shut down for the parade:

  1. Russell Street in the direction of Orchard Street. Russell Street will be closed at Massachusetts Avenue until the parade moves past to Beech Street.
  2. Massachusetts Avenue eastbound will be closed for about an hour and a half while the Honk parade move into Harvard Square.
