Canton Fire Chief Issues Burning-Season Reminders

Canton Fire Chief Charles Doody wants residents to remember they need a burn permit, and must call to check if burning is allowed that day.

CANTON, MA — Canton Fire Chief Charles Doody is looking to remind residents of some town and state burning bylaws with the state open burning season beginning next week. The next burning season starts Jan. 15 and continues through April 30.

Burning permits in Canton do not carry over from season to season. Residents need to re-apply for permits at the Canton Fire Department on Revere Street. Permits are free. Those who have obtained permits then must call 781-575-6654 to hear a message whether weather conditions allow for burning that day, and instructions to leave their name, address and permit number.

“As we approach outdoor burning season, we would like to remind our residents to exercise caution while burning debris,” Chief Doody said. “We ask that all residents keep a fire extinguisher at hand and to use common sense while burning.”

Outdoor burning is only permitted for brush, cane, driftwood, forestry debris, agricultural debris and — under certain conditions — fungus-infected elm wood. Burning grass, hay, leaves, stumps and commercial or industrial land clearing for non-agricultural purposes is prohibited.

Those who violate permit requirements or regulations can result in permit revocation. State law allows a fine of up to $500, plus cost of any extinguishing, and one month in prison for illegal burning.
