Dunkin' Donuts Gets Into Hot Water With Liverpool FC Supporters

The Canton-based chain, a sponsor of the English team, offended fans by changing the club crest in a way that was deemed insensitive.

Liverpool FC supporters have handed Dunkin’ Donuts a red card for messing about with the English soccer giant’s team crest.

As part of a Twitter campaign, Dunkin’ Donuts tweeted the crest of Liverpool FC alongside one that mirrored the shape, but was dedicated to Dunkin’ Donuts.

The coffee giant likely had no idea what kind of controversy would follow. Liverpool FC supporters take pride in the crest, namely because it honors 96 supporters who were killed in the Hillsborough disaster in 1989.

In the Liverpool-like crest, the eternal flames are dedicated to the 96 supporters and “You’ll Never Walk Alone” is an anthem that supporters sing at each match.

Dunkin’ Donuts replaced the eternal flames with two iced coffee cups and “You’ll Never Walk Alone” became “America Runs on Dunkin.’”

Liverpool FC supporters were quick to denounce the Dunkin’ Donuts crest, saying the crest change was in poor taste.

Dunkin’ Donuts quickly apologized for the issue.

“We apologize for any insensitivity regarding our tweet supporting an LFC-themed promotion featuring the LFC Crest. As a proud partner of LFC, we did not intend any offense, particularly to the Club’s supporters. We have removed the tweet and halted the campaign immediately.”
