New Canton Tobacco Rules Take Effect In 2018
The regulations, approved by the Board of Health in October, include a ban on new tobacco permits and the prohibition of certain products.

CANTON, MA – The town of Canton will enact new regulations pertaining to tobacco sales in the new year. The Board of Health in October unanimously approved the "Regulation of the Sale of Tobacco and Nicotine Products," which places a permanent embargo on the issuance of new permits to sell tobacco or nicotine products in town. Current permit holders in good standing will be allowed to renew their tobacco sales permits annually, and one additional permit for an exclusive e-cigarette shop is available if the application is submitted by Dec. 31.
Prohibited products include flavored tobacco, smokeless tobacco or items containing nicotine, with some exemptions. The town will also enact stricter penalties and an increase in fines for violations. Regulation revisions have been enacted on a rolling basis, starting with the ban on new permits and the revised penalties, according to a town announcement.
Products prohibited for sale must be removed from retail stores no later than Jan. 1.
