Charlestown to Discuss Proposed Solid Waste Transfer Center
Casella Resource Solutions hopes operate a transfer station at its current recycling facility located at 24 Bunker Hill Industrial Park.

On Monday, Nov. 30, the Charlestown Neighborhood Council Basic Services Committee will hold a public hearing on the request of Casella Resource Solutions to operate a solid waste transfer station at its current recycling facility located at 24 Bunker Hill Industrial Park off Rutherford Avenue.
The proposal seeks to have 650 tons per day of non-recycled trash from Charlestown, East Boston, South Boston, South End, and the Kenmore/Fenway area taken to the facility for consolidation, and transfer to a more permanent site. Hours of operation would be 6 days per week, 24 hours per day. All trash being handled will be held inside the building.
The meeting will be held at the Knights of Columbus Hall, located at 545 Medford Street. It will begin at 7 p.m.

The proposal requests that the city:
- Grant a zoning variance to operate such a facility
- Amend the Public Works Department regulations to lift the moratorium on waste transfer stations
- Obtain a “necessary and essential” designation from the city council/Mayor’s office
- Waive BRA design review
As the property straddles the Somerville town line, Casella will also need approval from that city, as well as other city and state approvals.
