Charlestown Sees Low Voter Turnout for Special Election

Voter turnout in Charlestown for the special state election on Tuesday was on par with citywide numbers, with about 25 percent of registered local voters casting their ballots for Massachusetts’ new U.S. senator.

Democrat Edward Markey, who won the seat with about 55 percent of the statewide vote, scored even bigger in Charlestown, taking a total of 1,912 local votes (about 61 percent) to Republican Gabriel Gomez’s 1,189 local votes (about 38 percent), according to unofficial results released by the Boston Election Department.

Twelve Visions Party candidate Richard Heos, who also secured a spot on the ballot, took 15 votes in Charlestown (less than 1 percent).

A total of 3,132 Charlestown residents voted in the June 25 special election, out of 12,539 registered voters, according to city results.

Citywide, 96,352 voters showed up to the polls, out of 390,789 registered voters—just under 25 percent.
