A Film a Day for Monthly Fee...at AMC Near Charlestown?

AMC and MoviePass are teaming up in January.

In an effort to increase the amount of Millennial moviegoers, AMC Theatres has agreed to a pilot partnership with MoviePass, a company focused on letting people attend a movie a day for one monthly fee.

The New York Times reported that the companies will aim to capitalize on the subscription entertainment platform that has led to success for Netflix and Spotify. AMC is the second-largest chain in North America behind Regal Entertainment and MoviePass was created in 2011.

Beginning in January, select theaters in Boston and Denver will begin offering MoviePass subscriptions, according to tech and media website The Verge.

Technology blog Gizmodo stated that monthly subscription packages will be offered for $35 and $45. For $45 a month, the customer can see films in any format, including IMAX and 3-D.

Movie theaters wish to increase their number of teen and young adult customers. The Nielsen Company said in early-December that the moviegoing of Americans age 12 to 24 dropped 15 percent in the first nine months of 2014, compared with the same period a year earlier.

Both companies have carried out different ways to curtail those declining numbers.

Last month, AMC offered unlimited viewings of Interstellar to AMC Stubs members for $19.99 and above, depending on the viewing format. The idea is to make that option available for theaters rather than specific films.

MoviePass has been giving people who sign up a membership card that functions like a debit card. When members want to see a movie, they use the MoviePass smartphone app to check in at the theater. The app instantly transfers the price of the ticket to the membership card, which is then used for entry.

If the pilot partnership proves to be successful, AMC and MoviePass will add the offer to other U.S. cities and regions.
