The inclusion of leap years and the added day in February every four years is humanity’s best attempt to sync calendars with the length of the natural year.

“It all comes down to the fact that the number of Earth’s revolutions about its own axis, or days, is not connected in any way for how long it takes for the Earth to go around the sun,” said John Lowe to National Geographic, who used to work for the National Institute of Standards and Technology’s Time & Frequency Division.

The problem is the solar year isn’t exactly 365 days, it’s 365.2422 days long, which means that no calendar of whole days can match the number. Visit NationalGeographic.org to learn more about how adding the leap day every four years addresses this problem and the complications that still remain.
