Tobin Bridge Lane Closures Friday, Saturday
Route 1 southbound lane closures starting now for paving operations tomorrow.

BOSTON, MA – Drivers beware: The Tobin Bridge is losing a lane today and tomorrow as MassDOT sets-up for paving Route 1 southbound tomorrow morning.
Crews overnight tonight, tomorrow, and then throughout the next four weeks will be milling, waterproofing, and paving on Route 1 southbound as part of a $41.6 million Tobin Bridge repair project, said MassDOT in a release.
The work will include fixing a section of the deck of the Bridge which carries traffic between the Charlestown and Chelsea. Work is scheduled to be completed at the end of 2020.

Beginning this afternoon, Friday, June 1, lane closures will start to be implemented on a section of the upper deck (Route 1 southbound) in Chelsea where crews will be conducting paving operations until about noon on Saturday, June 2.
The construction is supposed to happen mainly during off-peak hours, and the milling work this week has meant that daytime commuters have to travel on some milled roadway surfaces and reduce their speeds through these areas.
Three full lanes of travel will be in place on the Tobin Bridge this year during peak commute hours. Travelers are reminded that there will be future traffic impacts including permanent lane closures on Route 1 northbound during the 2019 and 2020 construction seasons.
The full scope of work will include steel repairs to the upper and lower decks, concrete deck work on the lower deck, followed by waterproofing, resurfacing, and installing pavement markings. Operations will also consist of utility installation, installing curbing, paving, constructing a new parking lot under the bridge between Williams Street and Third Street.
