Tobin Bridge Repairs Means Long-Term Delays For Commuters

The work, scheduled to begin in April, will shut down a northbound lane for months, among other delays.

CHELSEA, MA — The Tobin Bridge's $41 million multi-year rehabilitation project is expected to start April, and it's bad news for some commuters.

The drivers coming out of Boston on the lower deck along Route 1 North will notice one lane closed at all times from April through the end of the 2018 construction season. Drivers coming on the upper deck along Route 1 South will have it easier: Overnight off-peak lane closures during the same time.

The Everett Avenue on-ramp will also close in late April for about a month. When it reopens, the Beacon Street off-ramp will be closed for about two months. In November, the Fourth Street off-ramp will be closed for about a month.
