Trash Dump Proposed in Charlestown
A public hearing on the proposal is scheduled for Monday, Jan. 25.

A new trash dump may be coming to Charlestown, but city approvals are still pending and residents get the chance to have their say.
Casella Resources Solutions has proposed operating a solid waste transfer station at its current recycling facility at 24 Industrial Park off Rutherford Avenue. Casella would take in 650 tons of non-recyclable household trash per day at the proposed facility, with the possibility to expand in the future.
The trash would come from Boston neighborhoods and be trucked in 24 hours a day, six days a week. Casella estimates there would be 120 trash trucks and 20 tractor trailer trucks dumping their loads each day between 4 a.m. and 8 p.m.

The proposal requires the approval of the Boston Zoning Board and the elimination of a city moratorium on new waste transfer stations. The Boston City Council and the mayor’s office must also approve the proposal, and it would also require state approval.
Residents have a chance to voice their concerns and ask any questions they may have during a Charlestown Neighborhood Council Basic Services Committee public hearing Monday, Jan. 25 at 7 p.m. at the Knights of Columbus Hall at 545 Medford St. Questions can also be addressed to committee Chairman Bill Galvin at 617-242-3862.
