USS Constitution to Get Underway in Charlestown Friday
The effort commemorates the U.S. Navy's 239th birthday and the ship's 217th birthday.

More than 500 individuals are expected to gather at the USS Constitution at the Charlestown Navy Yard on Friday, Oct. 17 as part of the ship’s fifth and final underway demonstration of 2014, according to an announcement Thursday.
Friday’s event will also mark the warship’s final underway at Boston Harbor until 2018. During the downtime, the ship is scheduled to enter dry dock starting in March 2015 for a three-year restoration.

On Friday, the ship is set to get underway starting at 10 a.m. and feature a 21-gun salute off Fort Independence on Castle Island in South Boston at 11 a.m. Sailors will also conduct a 17-gun salute near the U.S. Coast Guard Base Boston before the ship’s return to the Charlestown Navy Yard at 1 p.m.
Meanwhile, the ship is set to be open for public tours from Thursday through Sunday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. starting the week of Oct. 20, according to Thursday’s announcement.
