What's on This Weekend

A quick guide on events around the neighborhood.

November is a busy month in Charlestown, with fundraisers, holiday events and school sports wrapping up. It's also packed with local art shows and performances. The bustle begins this weekend.

On Friday:

  • Boston Swing Central hosts Baby Soda Jazz Band, a "heart-pounding brand of hobo street jazz," and a night of dancing. A dance lesson is included in the cost of entry. The lesson starts at 8 p.m. and open dancing goes from 9 p.m. to midnight. Admission is $17, $15 for students and seniors.

  • The Charlestown Working Theater will put on the first of two performances of Chick With a Trick. The puppet show is based on Bulgaria's Pro Rodopi Art Center's production. It tells the story of a hen who lays a bonbon instead of an egg -- and finds a way to make the best of her situation. Curtain is at 2 p.m. (Chick With a Trick will be performed at the same time on Sunday.)

  • And before you go to bed on Saturday, don't forget to turn back your clocks! Daylight Saving Time technically begins at 2 a.m. on Sunday, but it's never fun to wake up and find that you're an hour off.

On Sunday:

  • The Charlestown Lions' Club will host an Old Time Pancake Breakfast in honor of Veterans' Day. Breakfast is served from 9 a.m. to noon at the Knights of Columbus. A $5 donation is encouraged.

    .
  • And after you've digested your pancakes, you can head over to 80 City Square for the 8th Annual New England Patriots Game Day, a fundraiser for the Charlestown Boys & Girls Club. There will be giant TV screens. There will burgers, dogs and drinks. There will be a silent auction and a raffle. Doors open at noon, but kickoff is at 1 p.m. Tickets are $75 at the door, and admission includes food and open bar.
