Chelmsford Coronavirus: Cases Rise To 176

As of Wednesday, April 22, a total of 176 people had tested positive for the virus that causes the COVID-19 illness.

CHELMSFORD, MA — The number of people who have tested positive in Chelmsford for the new coronavirus 176, according to town data.

As of Wednesday, April 22, a total of 176 people had tested positive for the virus that causes the COVID-19 illness. Of those 117 of cases are still active. It's not clear how many people in Chelmsford have died related to the virus, the town only reported that 59 of the cases are no longer active. A number of residents at a senior living facility in town have also tested positive for the virus.

The Massachusetts Department of Public Health reported 1,745 new confirmed coronavirus cases Wednesday, bringing the state's total to 42,944. The department also reported 221 new deaths, bringing the total number of coronavirus-related deaths in Massachusetts to 2,182. The increase in the daily number of new cases comes after the five straight days of falling new case reports.

The governor announced that schools will not reopen this school year, and instead, students will continue to practice distance learning. A state of emergency remains in effect until at least May 4. Massachusetts is now home to some of the highest number of cases in the country.

Echoing the health experts, town officials implored residents to continue to stay home as much as possible and to wear masks or cloth coverings when going out for essential items.

On April 11, 88 residents had tested positive. On April 16, the next time the town released information the number rose to 133:
