Chelmsford Friendly's Suddenly Closes

CHELMSFORD, MA – It's the end of an era for Friendly's restaurants in greater Lowell. The area's last remaining location, in Chelmsford Center, closed suddenly Sunday, according to the Lowell Sun.

The chain had operated out of 20 Boston Rd. in Chelmsford for many years. Employees were told Sunday the restaurant would permanently close the following day, and a sign posted on the front door Monday thanked customers for their business, the Sun reported.

The decision also took some Chelmsford officials by surprise. Town Manager Paul Cohen told the Sun the Friendly's space was recently advertised for sale, but he "was not informed or expecting" its closure.

Another Friendly's restaurant in Massachusetts closed in a similarly abrupt manner last month. Employees and customers of the chain's Milford location were told May 6 that it would close at the end of business that day.
