Nervous Check Casher Busted for Bogus Check
Lowell man charged with trying to pass bogus check at Chelmsford bank.

LOWELL - As he stood in line looking nervous and wearing a sweatshirt with the hood partially covering his face last Friday, Robert Gallant Jr. appeared suspicious to a teller at the Chelmsford branch of Citizen's Bank, according to Chelmsford police.
When Gallant reached the teller he attempted to cash a $1,200 check seemingly on a Citizens Bank account from a Billerica business with the notation in the notes part of the check "work performed.''
The business was legitimate, but Chelmsford police allege that was the only thing that was real about this bogus check.

The teller checked bank records which showed no Citizen's account for this business and the routing number was bogus, police allege.
Police then learned that Gallant, of 64 Warwick St., Apt. 1, Lowell, had a default warrant for his arrest out of Somerville District Court for failure to appear in court.

In Lowell District Court on Monday, Gallant, 37, was released on personal recognizance after pleading not guilty to charges of attempted larceny by a single scheme and uttering a false check.
Gallant's next court date is a pretrial conference on April 26.
