Son Accused Of Stealing $65,000 From His Elderly Mother
The brother tells police a new girlfriend may be the motivation for the theft.

LOWELL - A 51-year-old Chelmsford man is accused of stealing $65,000 from his elderly mother and then threatening to cut his own throat when he was confronted with the alleged theft, according to Chelmsford police.
David J. Callahan, of Scotty Hollow Drive, appeared in Lowell District Court on a summons charging him with larceny from someone over 60/disabled. He was released on personal recognizance with a pretrial conference date scheduled for April 10.
Chelmsford police allege in court document police responded on Jan. 1 to the Scotty Hollow address where David Callahan, who owns the unit, lives with his younger brother, Dennis J. Callahan, 50, and their 78-year-old mother.

Dennis Callahan told police that when he confronted his brother about the alleged theft from their mother's Bank of America account, David Callahan had put a knife to his throat and threatened to kill himself rather than go to jail, according to court documents. He then fled the unit and was arrested by police within the complex.
Police allege that the brothers oversee their mother's finances since her judgment is questionable and she has exhibited a pattern of paranoid behavior. Dennis Callahan told police he became aware that his brother had taken their mother to her bank on Dec. 22, 2016 and had her write out a check to him for $65,000, according to court documents.

The victim told police she signed some documents, but did not knowingly withdraw the money from her account.
While David Callahan declined to speak to police, his brother noted that David Callahan had been dating a woman named "Symphony'' and he believes that may be the motivation behind the theft, court documents state.
When police checked David Callahan's they allege that he deposited the full amount on Dec. 23, 2016 and within five days $40,000 was withdrawn, according to court documents.
