Boston Picked for U.S. Olympic Bid

The decision was made Thursday.

The U.S. Olympic Committee announced Thursday that Boston will represent the United States in its bid to host the 2024 Olympic Games.

The USOC came to the decision after meeting in Denver Thursday morning. Now the organization will make its case to the International Olympic Committee as to why the games should be held in Boston.

“It is an exceptional honor for Boston to be chosen as the U.S. representative in the running for the 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Games,” Boston Mayor Marty Walsh said as part of a recent press release. “This selection is in recognition of our city’s talent, diversity and global leadership. Our goal is to host an Olympic and Paralympic Games that are innovative, walkable and hospitable to all. Boston hopes to welcome the world’s greatest athletes to one of the world’s great cities.”

Los Angeles, San Francisco and Washington, D.C. were the other United States candidates.

The IOC won’t choose a city to host the 2024 games until 2017.
