CONCORD, MA—The Concord-Carlisle Patriots may have fallen in the Division 2 State Championship Game to New Mission, but students have garnered national praise for their displays of sportsmanship.

During their playoff game against Holliston, a contest in which the Patriots lead by 30 points at the half, the Concord-Carlisle student section showed an unexpected display of sportsmanship. This display comes on the heels of a controversial chant from the Catholic Memorial High School student section.

According to a column written by Yvonne Abraham of the Boston Globe, the Concord-Carlisle student section bestowed high adolescent praise upon the Holliston basketball team and student section.

The Concord fans started chanting “You guys are chill!” at Holliston, bestowing the ultimate in adolescent affirmation. Holliston returned, repeating, “We respect you!”

Then, all together: “Sportsmanship! Sportsmanship!”

As the valiant Holliston players’ clocks continued to be cleaned, the gym erupted into song, both sets of fans united in “Sweet Caroline” and then, “Don’t Stop Believin’. ”

The wonderful display of sportsmanship also caught the eyes of USA Today. Holliston was very appreciative, sending a message back to Concord-Carlisle via twitter.

While the Patriots may not have captured the state title, this display of sportsmanship and compassion is likely to be remembered for years to come.
