DANVERS, MA — A not guilty plea was entered in Salem District Court Thursday on behalf of the Beverly woman accused of hitting and seriously injuring a Danvers crossing guard in January.

Penny King, 58, of Beverly, was charged with negligent driving to endanger and failing to stop for a person in a crosswalk. During Thursday's arraignment, Judge Jane Prince denied a prosecution request that King be barred from driving and take random alcohol tests while awaiting trial.

Police found multiple nip bottles of alcohol in her car after the Jan. 8 crash. Prince, according to the Salem News, which first reported this story, said there was no evidence that King was drunk at the time of the crash.
