Modern Square Dancing Is Anything But Square

Have fun while exercising mind and body

Modern square dancing offers something for everyone and Riverside Squares of Danvers is offering a free introduction to it on Sept. 12th at the All Saints Episcopal Church. It’s a fun way of meeting and interacting with people that is much more personal than chatting on computers or cell phones. And contrary to old stereotypes, you won’t find the dance hall filled with old cow pokes trotting to ancient country and western songs.

Instead, families and teenagers, as well as senior citizens, enjoy moving briskly around the dance floor to catchy modern tunes accompanied by friendly, smooth-voiced callers. Modern square dancing combines fun, friendship, and fitness with no special talent necessary. Beginners are able to dance on this first free introductory ‘Fun Night.’ Then, it takes about 16 weeks to learn the first group of calls.

No partner, special shoes or fancy clothes are needed, just a willingness to listen and walk briskly. According to the American Heart Association, one hour of square dancing is about the same as running two miles but you don’t even realize it. It’s a great way to keep fit and improve your listening skills.
