NSMC Salem Hospital ER set to open on Sunday

At 6 a.m. on Sunday, November 3, the NSMC Salem Hospital Emergency Department (ED) will open on the Salem campus. The entrance to the new ED will be relocated to One Dove Ave., accessible from Jefferson Avenue or via a new access road that cuts through the NSMC Salem Campus between the Highland Ave. and Dove Ave entrances.

The new ED is part of $207 million expansion project on the NSMC Salem Hospital Campus that enables NSMC to consolidate Salem and Union hospitals. The expansion includes a new, larger, state-of-the-art Emergency Department, the Pingree Floor of 24 private inpatient rooms for medical patients and the 120-bed Epstein Center for Behavioral Health, serving adults, seniors and children/adolescents.

Also on Sunday, the ED and inpatient unit at NSMC Union Hospital will close. After November 3, Lynn residents who need emergency care should call 911 or go to the NSMC Salem Hospital Emergency Department in Salem. The new ED is nearly three times the size of the current ED and has been completely redesigned to enhance the patient experience.

“These new facilities are designed to ensure that all residents of the North Shore have access to state-of-the-art services and care here in the community,” says David J. Roberts, M.D., president of NSMC. “The new ED provides the incredible level of technology and sub-specialization that hospital patients require today.”

For less acute, urgent care, NSMC will also open an Urgent Care Center in the former Union Hospital Emergency Department on Monday, November 4 at 9 a.m. The Urgent Care Center will operate from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. seven days a week. Urgent care is appropriate for conditions such as coughs, minor burns, sprains, rashes and simple fractures. NSMC-affiliated urgent care is also available at the Mass General/North Shore Center for Outpatient Care in Danvers, at the Lynn Community Health Center and at Family Doctors, LLC, in Swampscott.

NSMC announced plans in 2013 to consolidate Salem and Union hospitals and create a single state-of-the-art facility in Salem equipped to meet the acute health care needs of the North Shore community. NSMC recently completed the project and opened the Pingree Floor and Epstein Center in October.

In addition, NSMC is building a 40,000 square foot medical village on the Union Campus in Lynn that will open in May 2020 and house many of the outpatient services currently provided on the Union Campus.

Sunday, November 3

· NSMC Salem Hospital Emergency Department opens at 6 a.m.

(All Ambulance/EMS vehicles directed to Salem at this point)

· NSMC Union Hospital Emergency Department closes at 11:59 p.m.

· NSMC Union Hospital Inpatient Unit closes.

· All other outpatient services based at NSMC Union Hospital remain:

o North Shore Physician Group medical practice

o Imaging (X-ray, ultrasound, mammography, bone density)

o Outpatient Behavioral Health

o Access to lab services (blood testing, etc.)

o Infusion Clinic

o Wellness Clinic

o Cardiac/Pulmonary Rehab

Monday, November 4

· NSMC Urgent Care opens at 9 a.m. in former NSMC Union Hospital Emergency Department. Urgent Care will be open from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. 7 days/week.

May 2020

· NSMC medical village opens on NSMC Union Campus. Includes

o North Shore Physician Group medical practice

o Partners Urgent Care – Open 9 a.m. to 9 p.m., 7 days/week

o Imaging (X-ray, ultrasound, mammography, bone density)

o Outpatient Behavioral Health

o Access to lab services (blood testing, etc.)
