Obituary: James S. Scannell Jr., Retired U.S. Air Force Captain

Following military retirement, he spent 20 years as the Financial Manager at the Corinthian Yacht Club in Marblehead.

James (Jim) S. Scannell, Jr., Captain, U.S. Air Force, Retired, passed away on August 4, 2015, after a courageous battle with cancer. Born to James and Dorothy (Dickinson) Scannell on August 21, 1936. Raised in Everett. Beloved husband of 49 years to Rose Marie (Puglia) Scannell; adoring father of Christina Centofanti and her husband Joseph, Linda Morrison and her husband Dennis, Cynthia Fanikos, and Stephanie Vessella and her husband Michael; loving brother of Marion Drago; “Grandpa” of Teddy, Ricky, Jimmy, D.J., Julia, and Travis; and “Uncle Jim” to many nieces and nephews.

Jim entered the U.S. Army in 1953 as an artillery mechanic, and then enlisted in the U.S. Air Force in 1958. He served as a Statistical Analyst, a Special Agent with the Office of Special Investigations, and a Missile Launch Officer while stationed in 10 different States and overseas in Turkey and Korea. Jim earned his Bachelor’s Degree at the University of Nebraska-Omaha and his MBA at the University of Missouri. Following military retirement, he spent 20 years as the Financial Manager at the Corinthian Yacht Club in Marblehead. In his later years, Jim enjoyed volunteering in the Retiree’s Office at Hanscom A.F.B. and spending time with his family and many friends.

Jim was preceded in death by his brothers George and Richard “Dick” Scannell and his sister Dorothy “Bunny” Scannell.
