Historic Dedham Building Damaged By Fire

A 2-alarm blaze broke out at the Norfolk House at 19 Court Street Thursday evening. The former hotel was built in 1801.

A two-alarm blaze damaged a historic structure in Dedham Thursday, fire officials said.

Around 5 p.m., firefighters responded to 19 Court Street to battle a fire at the Norfolk House, which was built 1801.

Fire officials said the blaze broke out in the attic of the three-story brick building. Firefighters were able to contain the flames, limiting most of the damage to the attic area.

Nobody was inside the building when the fire broke out. It is currently under construction. The cause of the fire is under investigation at this time.

The Norfolk House served as a tavern and hotel back in the 1800s. It once hosted a speech by Abraham Lincoln, according to the Chelsea Historical Society. Andrew Jackson also was stopped in to eat lunch at one point.
