Beginning in March, Joe Hamilton, Veterans Services Officer, and Patty Columbo, Administrative Assistant, organized resources, reached out to community partners and volunteers, and brainstormed a Memorial Day that welcomed both new and old traditions.

“It was important to us to plan events that honored the meaning of Memorial Day and maintained some local traditions here in Dedham,” Joe Hamilton said. “Working with the Combined Veterans Council, we organized a program for Memorial Day weekend that would allow for safe, in-person gatherings, and pay tribute to this significant day with solemn remembrance.”

With the help of over 25 volunteers over a span of more than 20 hours, over 2,500 American flags and approximately 300 medallions were placed at the headstones of Dedham Veterans in the Brookdale, St. Mary’s, and Village Cemeteries.
