Sherborn Shares One Book
Marcelo in the Real World by Sherborn resident Francisco X. Stork inspires a Community Read with multiple events in March
During the month of March, the Sherborn Library and Pilgrim Church will co-sponsor a community read entitled “Sherborn Shares One Book.” This town-wide reading campaign kicks off on Sunday, March 1st with the novel Marcelo and the Real World, by acclaimed writer and Sherborn resident, Francisco X. Stork. All residents are encouraged to read this wonderful, insightful book and partake of the events associated with “Sherborn Shares.” Readers can borrow one of 30 copies at the Library or acquire a copy at Pilgrim Church for a suggested donation of $5.00
Sherborn Shares One Book includes these events:
- On Sunday, March 1st at 10 a.m., Francisco Stork will speak during services at Pilgrim Church, to kick off a four part series that continues on March 15th, 22nd and 29th. The series consists of sermons that address the moral and ethical issues raised by the book, which will be followed by a curriculum-based book discussion. The general public is welcome and encouraged to participate.
- At 6 p.m. on Thursday, March 19th at the Sherborn Library, the public is invited to an opportunity to meet the author and enjoy refreshments.
- Following this, at 7 p.m., Mr. Stork and Pastor John Hudson will co-lead a book discussion. Rev. Hudson studied English at the University of Massachusetts, writes “Spiritually Speaking” which appears in newspapers throughout greater Boston, and has been a scholar in residence at the Collegeville Writers’ Institute at Saint John University in Collegeville, Minnesota.
- Students are invited to participate in an essay contest asking participants to address one of these questions: Is Marcelo “different?” What defines different for you? - OR - Do you have to compromise your values to be successful in life and in work? Essays must be submitted by March 27th at the Sherborn Library or by emailing referencelibrarian@comcast.net. Prize winners can select a gift card from Amazon, Newbury Comics, Fandango, iTunes, Etsy or Best Buy.
- Book discussion and pizza party for young adults at the Library on Tuesday March 31st, 6pm.
- On Thursday, March 26th at 6:30 at Sherborn Community Center, the film “The Story of Luke” will be shown. The film, like the book “Marcelo in the Real World” centers on an autistic teen trying to navigate life in the larger world. At the conclusion of the movie, there will be an informal discussion about autism led by Doctors Tony and Martha White of Sherborn, who are parents of an autistic teenager.
Marcelo in the Real World received broad critical acclaim. It tells the story of 17 year old Marcelo Sandoval, who hears music no one else can hear, part of the autism-like impairment no doctor can identify. The summer after his junior year in a special school, his father insists he take a job in his law firm, in order that Marcelo experience “the real world.” Marcelo’s venture into the real world awakens his knowledge of good and evil both outside and within. The challenges he courageously faces shake the foundations of his family life in ways no one could have predicted.
