Sherborn's Horse SenseAbility Receives Grant For Literacy Program
The $13,000 grant will be used for the organization's Reading, Writing and Riding program.
SHERBORN, MA — Horse SenseAbility, a Sherborn based nonprofit, received a $13,877 grant from the Middlesex Savings Charitable Foundation. The money will allow Horse SenseAbility to launch “Reading, Writing & Riding” in collaboration with the Framingham Public Schools.
Reading, Writing & Riding is a literacy support program designed to motivate 4th and 5th graders to read by providing access to high-quality, horse-themed books; tutoring to promote fluency in reading; and daily writing activities. Students also learn about, care for, and ride horses as part of the program. Starting in March, Reading, Writing & Riding will meet after school twice a week for 1½ hours for 10 weeks at Horse SenseAbility.
“Reading, Writing & Riding will offer elementary-age children reading below grade level a chance to improve their skills in a unique setting with an appealing focus: horses,” said Polly Kornblith, Founder and Executive Director, Horse SenseAbility. “Our goal is to inspire the children to read for pleasure not only in school. We’ll send them home with a personal library so they can continue to enjoy reading on their own.”
