Easton Obituary: Julia “Jay” Kamel

Ms. Kamel was a resident of Easton.

Julia “Jay” Kamel, 89, of Easton, formerly of Brockton for most of her life, died April 27, 2013.

Born in Brockton, she was a devoted daughter of the late Sam and Annie (Peter) Kamel.

She was retired after 35 years with ILGWU/UNITE as general manager of New England District Council and Local 24 Garment Workers. She was a spokesman for organized labor internationally especially for women’s working conditions. Julia served for 20 years on Brockton’s Redevelopment Authority Board.

She enjoyed dancing in past years and won trophies as The Jitterbug Queen and also traveling worldwide. A faith-filled, caring and giving woman, she was dedicated to her family.

Julia was the beloved sister of Elizabeth Jencunas of Easton, Catherine Mirza of Randolph, Edward Kamel of Avon, Lorraine Hill of Bridgewater and the late Joan Watson, Thomas Peter Kamel and Ida Nisby; and a dear aunt of many nieces and nephews.

All are welcome to calling hours Tuesday 4-7 p.m. with an Incense Service at 6 p.m. in Waitt Funeral Chapel at Waitt Funeral Home, 850 North Main St. Brockton, funeral from Waitt Funeral Home Wednesday at 9:30 a.m., 10:30 a.m. Service of the Divine Liturgy celebrated in St. Theresa Maronite Catholic Church and burial at Calvary Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to St. Theresa Maronite Church, 343 North Main St. Brockton MA 02301.
