Elderly Couple Killed In Easton Crash; Woman Arrested

EASTON, MA — An elderly couple was killed and a woman was arrested after a crash on Route 138 Thursday night. John Masefield, 79, and his wife, Virginia Masefield, 77, lived in East Bridgewater. Police said Sheri Vazquez, 33, of Easton, struck the couple's vehicle then fled the crash scene. Officers quickly tracked her down and took her into custody.

Vazquez was charged with motor vehicle homicide, assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, reckless operation of a vehicle, leaving the scene of a crash (death resulting) and unlicensed operation of a vehicle.

Vazquez was driving a Dodge Journey sport utility vehicle at a "high rate of speed" on Route 138 when she crashed into the Masefields' vehicle near Purchase Street, according to Quinn.

"After the collision ... Vazquez, who was the sole occupant of the Dodge Journey, exited her vehicle and ran from the scene," Quinn said in a statement. "She was arrested a short time later just over the town line in West Bridgewater."

Vazquez was transported to a local hospital for possible treatment and will be arraigned in Taunton District Court.
