Macy's in Taunton Closing

The Taunton Macy's and Brockton Macy's are among 68 Macy's stores closing this year.

TAUNTON, MA — Struggling retail giant Macy's on Wednesday announced it will close 68 stores, including one in Taunton and another in Brockton. Those stores will close at the end of the year.

Associates at shuttered stores may have the option to transfer to nearby locations that remain open, the company said, and some full- and part-time associates will be offered severance packages.

The Taunton Macy's has 79 workers and the Brockton location has 82.

The closures will leave Macy's with 662 stores.

The company said the closures will save more money, reinvest it in e-commerce and give a smaller number of stores a better customer experience.

Macy's stock dropped nearly 11 percent in after-hours trading Wednesday after the closures were announced.

Macy's CEO Terry Lundgren said the closures will save about $550 million. He said the company will shift focus to growing online sales, improving existing stores, and reaching the Chinese market.

"We continue to experience declining traffic in our stores," Lundgren said in a statement. "We remain focused on the actions that will ultimately improve our financial results and provide the greatest return for our shareholders.”
