Fenway Shooting Victim ID'd; Police Seek Suspects

A commuter rail train conductor was caught in the crossfire on his way to work. Anyone with information is urged to contact police.

Police have identified the man killed in a shooting near Fenway Park early Thursday morning, and continue to search for suspects.

Jephthe Chery, a 29-year-old commuter rail conductor, was on his way to work when he was caught in the crossfire outside at a private event at Who’s On First on Yawkey Way, police said. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Officers responded to the sound of shots fired at 19 Yawkey Way at 2 a.m. Thursday morning, police said. When they arrived, they found a Chery “suffering from an apparent gunshot wound,” police said. Three other men in their 20s were transported to Boston-area hospitals with non-life-threatening injuries, police said.

The shooting followed high school football games at Fenway, according to WCVB, and “hundreds” were in the area at the time the shots were fired.

There were hundreds of people in the area, many of whom scattered when the bullets started flying, making it difficult for police to determine who is the shooter.

Keolis, the company that operates the Commuter Rail, released a statement calling Chery’s death a sensless tragedy.

“MBTA Commuter Rail and Keolis Commuter Services mourns the senseless loss of conductor Jephthe Chery,” the statememnt reads. “He was beloved and respected by his friends and colleagues on the railroad. Today we think deeply of his family, friends and coworkers.”
