Red Sox, Not Socks, Champs To Visit White House

This morning the White House listed the event as for the Boston Red Socks, but changed it a few hours later.

BOSTON — Some of the Red Sox team will visit the White House this afternoon in honor of their 2018 World Series victory. As pundits were discussing the list of who is planning to attend and why several aren't, something else popped up to talk about. It appeared the White House was not actually sure how to spell the name of the 2018 Boston champs team.

On both the White House website and the YouTube channel the event was listed for the "Red Socks," not "Red Sox."

"President Trump Welcomes the 2018 World Series Champions The Boston Red Socks to the White House," read the event.

That caught the eye of a few fans. While some rolled their eyes and complained about the error, others pointed out that "sox" is a weird spelling anyway.

But there is a reason for it: Owner John Taylor chose the name and spelling after the 1907 season, to refer to the red hose in the team uniform beginning in 1908. Why the short spelling? Well, it was first adopted for the Chicago White Sox by newspapers needing a headline-friendly form of stockings, according to the New York Tribune archives.

After a couple hours the typo was fixed on the White House listings. On to the visit:

Some 20 players, including Pitcher Chris Sale, are expected to make the visit to the White House Rose Garden at 3:45 p.m. today.

Several on the team, including Manager Alex Corra, indicated they've declined the invitation, for political reasons. Others who might not go include Mookie Betts, Jackie Bradley Jr., Rafael Devers, Hector Velazquez, Xander Bogaerts, Sandy Leon Christian and Vazquez David Price, according to earlier reports.
