VIDEO: David Ortiz Officially Announces Retirement
The iconic Red Sox slugger will call it a career after one more season.

David Ortiz, widely regarded as the most clutch hitter in Red Sox history, is hanging up the spikes after one more season.
The Red Sox designated hitter made it official Wednesday, announcing his pending retirement in a youtube video on his 40th birthday. Ortiz thanked the Red Sox and the
“I’m really proud of what I have accomplished. I wish I could play another 40 years,” Ortiz said in the video, adding that it’s time to move on to the next chapter in his life. “But it doesn’t work that way. After this year, time is up. So let’s enjoy next season.”

Ortiz, a nine-time MLB All-Star, turns 40 years old on Wednesday, Nov. 18.
Since joining the Red Sox in 2003 as a designated hitter, Ortiz has clubbed 445 home runs. He became the 27th player in league history to hit 500 career home runs this past season.

Ortiz helped power the Red Sox to three World Series championships in 2004, 2007, and 2013, hitting multiple game-tying or game-winning hits in the postseason.
