A Resident's Guide to Foxborough's Memorial Day Weekend 2013

Foxborough's Memorial Day parade will begin Monday, May 27th at 8:45 a.m. in front of the American Legion Post on Mechanic Street. There will be a ceremony at the foot of the Common following parade.

It is often a weekend associated with cookouts and the unofficial beginning of summer, but Memorial Day is truly a day to remember the military veterans who died in service – sacrificing their lives for our country's freedom.

Foxborough will pay tribute to those who have made the ultimate sacrifice for our freedom and our country on Monday, May 27th with the town's annual Memorial Day Parade, which begins at 8:45 a.m. in front of the American Legion Hall on Mechanic Street and ends at the foot of the Common. A ceremony on the Common will follow the parade.

“We invite all the citizens to come and show your support for the veterans,” said Bob Siteman, Foxborough’s chairman of the Veteran Services Advisory Committee.

Patrick is the son of Foxborough residents Chris and Paula Mitchell.

More About Memorial Day

According to http://www.usmemorialday.org, Memorial Day was officially proclaimed on May 5, 1868 by General John Logan, national commander of the Grand Army of the Republic, in his General Order No. 11, and was first observed on May 30, 1868, when flowers were placed on the graves of Union and Confederate soldiers at Arlington National Cemetery.

The first state to officially recognize the holiday was New York in 1873 and by 1890 it was recognized by all of the northern states. The South refused to acknowledge the day, honoring their dead on separate days until after World War I when the holiday changed from honoring just those who died fighting in the Civil War to honoring Americans who died fighting in any war.

It is now celebrated in almost every state on the last Monday in May.
