Foxborough Resident and Inspiration Danny Nickerson Passes Away

A Foxborough boy that once inspired people from across the globe to send him birthday cards has passed away.

Danny Nickerson, a six-year-old Foxborough resident who made headlines with a simple request for those cards, passed away Friday night after an 18-month battle with cancer. His passing was announced on the Danny’s Warriors Facebook page run by his mother Carley Nickerson.

“My precious sweet boy earned his angel wings earlier this afternoon after a courageous 18 month battle. Our lord came and carried his body to heaven. His body was so tired of fighting. He is now cancer free and running and playing and laughing with God and all of the other precious children,” she wrote.

Diagnosed with an inoperable brain tumor in October 2013, Nickerson gained notoriety when his request for birthday cards last summer went viral, resulting in the young Foxborough resident receiving over 100,000 cards from all over the world.

If anything, 2014 was the year of Danny. Last May, Mansfield-based Hero Helpers of America held the first annual Danny’s Family Fun at Waxy O’Conners to help raise funds for his care and expenses.

Later that year, Nickerson was treated to a birthday party at Gillette Stadium sponsored by Cops For Kids With Cancer organization, which saw a procession of thousands of public safety officials and vehicles at the stadium and Patriot Place.

In September, Nickerson joined Patriots owner Robert Kraft in cutting the ribbon at the Igo School’s new playground paid for with a grant from the NFL.
