FOXBOROUGH, MA — The Patriots canceled Wednesday's practice after Stephon Gilmore, the team's top defensive player, tested positive for the coronavirus, according to multiple reports.

The cornerback and reigning Defensive Player of the Year played in Monday night's game against the Kansas City Chiefs. It's unknown when he was infected with the virus, though he tested positive Tuesday — the team's lone positive test that day.

Gilmore joins star quarterback Cam Newton and practice squad player Bill Murray as having active cases of the virus.

The NFL postponed the Patriots-Chiefs game from Sunday to Monday after Newton tested positive. He is reported to be asymptomatic.

Repeated testing came back negative for the rest of the team Monday morning, but it can take days after an infection for a test to come back positive.

New England took a chance in flying to Missouri. The team took two separate planes — one was with players and coaches deemed to be in close contact with Newton. It's unknown what plane Gilmore was on.

The Patriots are scheduled to host Denver Sunday afternoon.
