RI Man Sentenced After Leading Foxboro PD Chase With Kids In Car

Jonathan Cleveland admitted to intentionally striking a police cruiser and leading officers on a chase while his two sons were in the car.

FOXBOROUGH, MA — A Rhode Island man who led Foxborough police on a high-speed chase last year with his children in the car was sentenced to 18 months in prison.

Jonathan Cleveland, 51, of Pawtucket, was sentenced after pleading guilty in Dedham District, the Norfolk County District Attorney's office said.

The sentence though was deemed already served because Cleveland spent time in jail awaiting trial, the Sun Chronicle reported. Cleveland will be under house arrest with a GPS bracelet for a year, according to court records.

Cleveland pleaded guilty to reckless endangerment of a child, leaving the scene of an accident with property damage, driving with a suspended license and various assault charges.

According to police, an officer pulled over Cleveland around 9 p.m., May 20, 2019 at the America's Best Value Inn on Route 1 because of a registration issue with his car. Police said the chase started after Cleveland tried using his car to pin the officer the building.

Cleveland then led officers on a chase down Route 1 through Wrentham and eventually into Cumberland, Rhode Island. While in Wrentham, Cleveland intentionally struck a police cruiser and drove at another, leaving a Wrentham police officer with minor injuries.

The chase ended in Cumberland, Rhode Island after Cleveland pulled into a driveway and surrendered. Police said Cleveland gave up because his car ran out of gas. Although police didn't know at the time of the case, Cleveland had his two sons, ages 4 and 6 in the backseat, as well as his girlfriend in the front seat.
