Waxy O'Conner's Permanently Shuts Down Foxborough Location

The health department has not cancelled Waxy's hearing scheduled for Jan. 14 and will have it whether or not pub representatives show up.

FOXBOROUGH, MA — Waxy O'Connor's has taken matters into its own hand, announcing it will close for good. The popular Irish pub, which recently failed a restaurant inspection from Foxborough's health department, was scheduled to appear before the department next week, a meeting officials said was still on after the announcement.

Waxy O' Connor's in a press release said it blames the town for having to close after facing "punitive measures" that have made it impossible to stay in business. The health department argues the restaurant did not meet the town's sanitation standards. On Dec. 26, the department inspected the pub and said they found perishable food coming in non-refrigerated vans, a moldy fridge and a bar without cleaning products.

After more than 10 year’s operating in the Foxboro community, it is with a heavy heart we inform you that the Waxy’s Corporate team has made the regretful decision to officially suspend operations at its Foxboro location indefinitely. As a result of the punitive measures imposed by the town over Christmas and the New Year, and after sincere thought and consideration, Waxy’s has decided that, due to the unexpected disruption to the restaurant’s operations, it is impossible to continue doing business at our Main Street location when lost revenue, reputational damage and associated commercial ramifications are considered.

According to Health Director Pauline Zajdel, the pub has not contacted the health department after the failed inspection besides one email, which said it would be in touch soon, the Sun Chronicle reported.

In a statement from Waxy's, the restaurant disputed what the health inspection claimed.

"This past year we have introduced a new executive chef, a new menu, and hired a consultant," the statement said. "We have continually over the years implemented enhanced food safety procedures through staff training and certifications and through a significant capital expenditure program."
