The initiative was called "Coins for K9 Officer Zita" and was spearheaded by Millbury Street Elementary School.

GRAFTON, MA — The Grafton Police Department was surprised with some extra funding for its K9 officer from an unlikely group: elementary school students. Millbury Street Elementary school presented a $1,178 check to Officer Joe Coggans and K9 Zita last month.

The school collected coins from the entire student body to raise the funds. The check was presented by fifth-grader Michael B. and Principal Joanne Stocklin during an assembly in front of the student body.

The department said the money will be used for K9 Zita's care and training. In a Facebook post, the department said, "Thanks to Principal Stocklin and all the MSES students for their fundraising efforts to assist with our K9 program."
