Letter to the Editor: Hamilton Man Has Been Blessed by 'Kindness and Extraordinary Generosity"

A Hamilton man and his family writes to thank members of the community for helping to return to West Africa to visit his mother.

To the Editor:

My husband Mamadou Diouck and I would like to express our gratitude to the people who have made it possible for him to visit his mother in Senegal, West Africa as her health has begun to decline. We were stunned by the outpouring of generosity and support he received, without which he wouldn’t have been able to make the trip.

As an attendant at a local gas station, and as a driver and seasonal employee at the Pingree School, he has been blessed by acts of kindness and extraordinary generosity. From the start of his stay at the gas station, folks have extended themselves in conversation, dropped off gloves on frigid days and shared holiday cookies. At the Pingree School, Mamadou has found a warm community of thoughtful, resourceful folks who want to see him achieve the success he so deserves. So it’s not surprising — and yet it is — that people helped him in his time of need.

We would like to thank everyone who has in some way, through some kind gesture, made Mamadou feel at home in the community, and especially those who have made possible his recent travels, including the Bernhardt, Burnside, Colloredo-Mansfeld, Dolan and Lake families. May we all be our best selves as they have been, and help others even a little bit every day.
