The community rallied around a family who lost their father to an unexpected cancer diagnosis.

GLOUCESTER, MA –No one fights alone. That theme ran through the speakers, through guests' smiles and through the hearts of the Heyer family at a fundraiser in Gloucester Monday night.

Guests gathered at the Cruiseport to celebrate the life of Aaron Heyer, a 36-year-old Gloucester father. Heyer lost his life to renal cancer on Mother’s Day, just after the couple finalized the adoption of a 6-month-old baby boy named Max. Aaron and his wife, Heather, also have a 4-year-old son, Bryce.

After the hors d'oeuvres had been passed and the raffle winners were announced, Heather’s family revealed something special. As a surprise for Heather and her boys, they purchased a memory bench that will sit near the water in Gloucester and act as a site of healing and peace.

The goal of the fundraiser was, of course, to raise money for the boys and their future. While it appeared to be successful at that, the sheer volume of support for the family was priceless and overflowing from the room. But even with enough support, the family is still missing its center, its rock. And it’s never too late to help.
